At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Briarcliff, Arkansas. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Our specialty is hair testing, with testing centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other customized solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor it over standard urine tests. It is preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and for individuals on probation. Hair tests offer a longer detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an extended record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid test for common drugs. While Screening offers a cost-effective technique to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally permissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening do require additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is retrieved from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Testing resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Different factors including hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite common reference as "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Excels Over Urine Testing in Briarcliff, AR, lies in its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests detect drug use over an extended period, providing a comprehensive view of one's substance habits. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated, hair sample integrity remains intact.

The ability of hair tests to accurately reflect long-term substance use is unmatched. While urine tests might deliver faster results, they fall short in detecting historical drug use. Hair tests reveal a more complete substance history, thus offering employers a more reliable screening tool.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Briarcliff, AR: Hair follicle tests offer a remarkable detection window, identifying drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This thorough timeline provides employers with an extensive understanding of an individual's substance history, far exceeding the detection abilities of urine tests.

With this extended period, employers can confidently assess the applicant or employee's past substance use. This comprehensive view aids in cultivating a safer, more informed workforce, ensuring that unknowable concerns don't compromise safety or integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair Follicle Testing in Briarcliff, AR, is a tamper-resistant method that significantly reduces sample adulteration risk, delivering unquestionable results. Unlike other testing methods, the integrity of a hair sample is maintained throughout the process, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

The security of hair tests makes it virtually impossible for subjects to alter the test's outcome. Employers and professionals can trust these results implicitly, knowing that they present a genuine reflection of an individual's substance use history without manipulation risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
