In Brighton, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we are experts in hair analysis and operate testing centers in every city across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common as a method for drug screening in recent years. This test is now preferred by numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts over the traditional urine test. It is favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and for probation purposes due to its extensive detection range of up to 90 days and nearly impossible manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best option for assessing drug use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by trapping chemical indicators inside the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. In reference to head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial phase of inputting a sample into a laboratory's system. This stage involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug usage for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is compulsory for it to be court-admissible. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the original specimen is collected and processed for Extraction. Here, substances are withdrawn from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specific and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect only a short period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
