Complete hair follicle drug testing services are available through Accredited Drug Testing in Cabot, Arkansas. Our centers nationwide, including in Cabot, AR, specialize in hair and alcohol testing. Suitable samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol/ETG, hair testing offers customized options.

Increasingly favored for its accuracy, the hair follicle drug test is frequently chosen by employers, courts, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse over urine testing. Hair drug tests provide a superior detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring compliance with zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements. Although excellent for long-term use, urine testing is more precise for detecting recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug usage up to a 3-month span. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and simple to send.

A hair segment of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hairs (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we denote only scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a specimen into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any additional entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive Screening needs confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positive results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the toughest to carry out.

Confirming any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair shaft, not the scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
