Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Casa, AR. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise in hair testing is nationwide with centers available in every city, ready to perform the test. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, either from the head crown or body. Hair samples are valuable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other customized analyses.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair testing over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug assays are utilized by strict drug policy employers, judicial authorities, and those on probation. A key advantage of hair tests is their extensive detection timeframe, lasting up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, for drug consumption occurring in the preceding five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a long-lasting record of alcohol and drugs due to the capture of biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can present a detection range of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there isn’t scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying that the sample was sealed and transported properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result needs to be confirmed for admissibility in court. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample is indicated as positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can discern drug use for as long as 90 days, in comparison with urine tests, which have a shorter detection range.
  • Cheat-proof: It is exceptionally challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Displays historical usage: It provides a timeline of drug use over a duration, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
