Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Cass, Arkansas. When you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in these tests and provide services through centers in cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can trace drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

Recently, there has been a shift towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests more frequently for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are now opting for hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. These tests serve companies with no-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. Their key advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them difficult to manipulate, whereas urine tests remain most precise for substances ingested within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair functions as a historical archive of substance intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For tests such as EtG, extensions, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be procured, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. By “head hair,” we refer exclusively to scalp hair. “Body hair” encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This step entails verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-effective measure to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that yield presumptive positives in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is indicative of positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screenings can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug screening, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent intake: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to surface in hair analysis.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the scalp root

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
