Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Casscoe, Arkansas. Whether you need a hair or alcohol test, we have nationwide centers that specialize in hair testing. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customizable options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methodologies. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with strict drug policies, the courts, and probationary circumstances. They provide a long detection window of up to 90 days and are collected under observation, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lasting record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. If gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp should yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of the sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not available from an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a subsequent confirmation is necessary for a positive result to be admissible in legal settings. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at a more diluted concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine analyses which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are very resistant to tampering, thus enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Provides historical data: They can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug analyses are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis specifically examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
