Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Central City, Arkansas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to, with facilities in all cities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Recently, the propensity for drug testing methods has leaned more towards hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations demanding zero-tolerance for drug use, courts, and probation departments prefer hair follicle tests. The key advantage includes a detection span of up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is extremely hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronological record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, specimens of 150mg are advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase of lab integration of a sample. This step comprises verifying the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and finalizing any supplemental information not captured by a digital custody chain system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to discard drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for court acceptability. Presumptively positive samples in Screening undergo secondary verification.

If Screening indicates presumptive positivity, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at concentrations far lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

The verification of positive screenings uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before verification as required. The end-to-end lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which show a shorter period.
  • Low probability of deception: Cheating on a hair test is highly unlikely, ensuring result precision.
  • Historical usage pattern: It reflects extended drug use patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing often costs more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
