Authorized Drug Testing executes thorough hair follicle assessments in Delaware, Arkansas. If a hair alcohol or drug test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with nationwide centers ready to conduct these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically necessary. Hair examinations are viable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing methods.

Recently, drug testing strategies have more often integrated hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair testing over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve entities with strict drug-use prohibition, legal venues, and those on probation. The main advantage: an extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, collected under watchful oversight, and nearly immune to tampering. Yet, for detecting use within the past 5 days, urine remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand, hair provides a comprehensive overview of alcohol and other drug usage. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period extending to roughly three months for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch hair portion of about 200 strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for analysis and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent mass of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we're specifically addressing scalp hair only. Body hair categorizes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The chief steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the sample's initial processing into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input absent in an electronic custody chain.

Screening acts as a swift initial evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient means to negate drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires validation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening must have secondary confirmation.

For samples appearing presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo cleansing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres both to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenges to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical use pattern: It offers an insight into drug use patterns over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
