Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dell, Arkansas. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in hair analyses and have a broad network of testing centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for most circumstances. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity. More employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are turning to hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation due to their longer detection window, which can last up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair holds a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug use for up to around 90 days. It is easy to gather hair samples, slightly challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample 1.5 inches long, roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for examination and verification. For EtG, additional substances, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is recommended. If there is no available scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair can substitute. When mentioning head hair, this specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial sample intake into the lab's system. This means checking the sample's seal and proper shipment, giving a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial speedy review for substances of abuse. Though it's an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive outcome needs confirmation for legal acceptance. All samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening undergo a secondary verification.

In cases where the Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drug traces are removed from hair in substantially minor concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any favorable Screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before Confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It shows a timeline of drug consumption across a duration, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth discrepancies can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Generally referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
