Accredited Drug Testing offers full-service hair follicle drug testing in Desha, Arkansas. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test conducted through hair analysis, we are specialists in this area and have test centers across all cities Nationwide ready to assist. Hair requirements are typically 1.5 to 2 inches from the head, although body hair works in some cases. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored to your needs.

The trend in recent years has leaned toward the utilization of hair follicle drug tests more frequently. Employers, judges, and addiction specialists are favoring hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by employers adhering to strict drug policies, legal entities, and probation departments. The main advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, which can reach up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and almost impossible to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as they form. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to three months. The collection of hair samples is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (roughly matching the circumference of a #2 pencil) cut nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, a recommended 150mg sample should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent mass of body hair is acceptable. Head hair explicitly refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures to process a drug test include four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the entry phase of getting a sample into a lab's workflow. This stage involves making sure the sample has been securely sealed and correctly transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the first examination for substances of misuse. Although Screening offers an economical way to check a large number of samples, a positive reading must be confirmed to be legitimately acceptable in legal situations. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening need to undergo another confirmation test.

Should any sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is taken for use in Extraction. This phase removes drugs from hair at remarkably lower levels than in other testing methods like urine or oral fluids, illustrating why hair drug testing is the most complex method to perform.

Confirmation for any positive results from Screening utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. Every step in the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use span up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover shorter periods.
  • High accuracy preventing deception: Results are more reliable due to difficulty in circumventing a hair drug test.
  • Chronological data: Capable of illustrating a timeline of drug use over an extended duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of revealing immediate use: A period of approximately 5-7 days is required before substances appear in hair samples.
  • Higher costs: Generally, hair drug testing is more costly than other methods of drug screening.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
