Accredited Drug Testing in Dixie, Arkansas, provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing nationwide. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, we offer specialized hair testing with centers available in cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are utilized. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and experts in Substance Abuse now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and probationers rely on hair tests for their extended detection window, generally lasting 90 days. The test is observed, reducing the likelihood of tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for recent usage, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels above 10, 150mg of the hair specimen is suggested. The specimen should ideally be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for discounting drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to be legally admissible. Samples presumed positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Altering a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: The cost of hair drug tests is generally higher compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
