Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Etowah, Arkansas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing. We have testing facilities in every city nationwide that can conduct hair tests. Typically, a 1.5 to 2-inch hair sample from the crown or body is required. Hair analysis can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a drug testing method. Many employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is favored by organizations with strict zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary systems. Its key advantage lies in its extended detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days. The test is collected through a supervised process, making it almost impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer an extended historical record of alcohol and drug intake by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair may provide insights into alcohol and drug use covering up to a 3-month timeframe. Sampling hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands, roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil, near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG extensions, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps involved in laboratory processing of a drug test sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's framework. This task involves ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid test for the presence of addictive substances. While Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is among the most intricate methodologies.

Verification of any positive Screening outcomes occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed as necessary prior to confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extraordinarily challenging, thus enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Provides historical insights: Capable of illustrating a trend of substance use over time instead of only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot track recent consumption: The detectability of drugs in hair typically begins approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Differing outcomes: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
