In Fiftysix, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If a hair or alcohol test is required, we specialize in such testing and have facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for most tests. Hair analyses can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. Various entities like employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests attract those with zero-tolerance policies by offering a longer detection window of up to 90 days, needing supervised collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent means for assessing substance consumption. The strands offer a timeline of drug or alcohol use by capturing biomarkers in the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of around three months for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, equivalent to roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil’s thickness), yields 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for testing and subsequent confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is ideal. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of drug testing outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is where the sample first enters the lab’s procedures. Tasks include checking the sample's seal and shipment integrity, issuing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any lacking data entry not available electronically.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance use. Though it cost-effectively excludes drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When Screening indicates a sample is presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and made ready for the Extraction stage. Drugs are isolated from hair in this stage at a much finer concentration than other testing methods (e.g., urine, oral fluids), which explains why hair drug screening is more intricate.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive findings from the Screening. All presumptive positive samples receive a wash before confirmation if required. The entire process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is subject to scrutiny by CAP (College of American Pathologists) and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days in the past, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage patterns: It showcases a historical pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and growth rate can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis evaluates the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
