In Friendship, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair follicle drug testing services. Our facilities span nationwide, making hair or alcohol testing easy and accessible. With a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or body, comprehensive analyses can be performed. Hair testing provides options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more custom tests.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests, especially for zero-tolerance policies and probation monitoring. Hair tests have a long detection window of up to 90 days and offer almost foolproof accuracy, especially compared to urine tests, which remain accurate for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol presence. The hair captures long-term evidence of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. A sample taken close to the scalp can present up to a three-month timeline for noting the ingestion of alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch cluster of nearly 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of hair is preferable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. When scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" strictly denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective way to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives identified in Screening need an additional confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive from Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for processing in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral swabs), presenting hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive Screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is verified under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited window.
  • High accuracy: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to subvert, yielding more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical usage: Enables analysis of drug intake patterns over extended periods, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection gap: It takes around 5-7 days post-use for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing avenues.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure itself assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
