In Glendale, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need an alcohol test or a hair drug test, we specialize in hair analysis and have testing centers nationwide. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for the test. Our hair tests can be customized to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

In recent times, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation programs. The main advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty in tampering with results. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers an approximate three-month window for detecting alcohol and drug use. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment, containing around 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is ideal for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. “Head hair” specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas “body hair” encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of recording a sample into the lab system. This phase ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody may not provide.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in the Screening phase necessitate further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid tests), rendering hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptively positive sample undergoes a cleaning process as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can track drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Reduced likelihood of tampering: The difficulty in adulterating a hair drug test enhances accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
