Accredited Drug Testing facilitates comprehensive hair follicle analysis in Grand Glaise, Arkansas. For any hair-based substance examination needs, our expertise in this area is unparalleled, with facilities ready to serve across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices. Such tests can be customized to detect various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

The adoption of hair follicle drug testing has surged recently, often taking precedence over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probationary oversight increasingly prefer this method. Its principal advantage lies in extending detection up to 90 days, with its collection being closely monitored, making it highly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for drug use in the last 5 days, urinalysis remains unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, hair offers a prolonged record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, it enables detection of alcohol and drugs for a period of up to three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and it can be easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both initial screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to utilize a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If head hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" is specifically in reference to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types, such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is introduced to the laboratory's system. This involves confirming the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for substance abuse. Despite being an economical approach for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal proceedings. Samples that are presumably positive in Screening need an additional confirmation.

Samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening undergo Extraction, where more hair is extracted from the initial sample. In this phase, drugs are isolated in the hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more complex process.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that test presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is subjected to evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Records history of use: It can track drug use patterns over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often named "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
