Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Greenwood, Arkansas. Whether you’re in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled. We have facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored options.

Of late, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently turn to hair follicle drug tests. A significant advantage of this method is its extended detection period, covering up to 90 days, with results obtained through an observed collection process, making attempts to cheat nearly impossible. For detecting recent usage within the last 5 days, however, the urine test remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained recognition as a significant technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximating the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample amount for analysis and corroboration. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond ten panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unaccessible, the same amount of hair from the body can be collected. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four main phases involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes adding the sample into the laboratory’s system initially. This encompasses verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, a larger amount of hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), explaining why hair drug screening presents more challenges than other methodologies.

Confirmation for any presumptively positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair status and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug consumption up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to trick: It is notably hard to deceive a hair drug test, providing more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers an overview of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair coloration and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis uses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Greenwood, AR, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Among these benefits are increased detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can detect substance use over a more extended period, providing a more comprehensive view of an individual’s drug use history. Unlike urine tests, which can be susceptible to tampering, hair tests offer results that are difficult to manipulate, making them a preferred choice.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. In Greenwood, AR, this method can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, offering employers a thorough insight into the substance history of applicants or employees. This long detection period means that hair testing provides not just a snapshot of recent use but a broader perspective of an individual’s patterns, making it invaluable for making informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Greenwood, AR, hair follicle tests provide a tamper-resistant testing method that greatly reduces the potential for sample adulteration. The stringent procedures involved in collecting and analyzing hair samples ensure that results are reliable and indisputable, thereby providing assurance and confidence in the outcomes. For organizations, this means an additional safeguard against attempts to alter or falsify drug test results, reinforcing their drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
