Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle evaluations in Gurdon, Arkansas. When a hair or alcohol examination is needed, our specialized services include nationwide centers equipped to conduct these tests. Hair length on the crown or from the body should measure 1.5 to 2 inches for analysis. Hair screenings cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing requirements.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle assessments. These are now a preference for many employers, legal courts, and substance specialists, over the conventional urine exams. Employed rigorously by zero-tolerance organizations, courts, and for probation monitoring, hair testing's primary advantage is its extended detection reach, generally up to 90 days, being conducted under observation, which makes tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for monitoring drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine assessments remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, the hair can cover up to a 3-month timeframe for spotting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample’s initial integration into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry outside of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: Provides a historical pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
