Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Haskell, Arkansas. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our expertise in hair tests is matched by nationwide testing centers in every city capable of conducting hair evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the body's crown is sufficient. Hair assessments can determine drug, alcohol/ETG presence, or be tailored to specific needs.

In the past years, hair follicle drug assessments have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug assessments over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. A major advantage is their longer detection span, up to 90 days, observed collection process, making deception nearly impossible. Yet, for recent drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal drug use for up to a 3-month period. This method is simple to collect, challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for testing. For EtG, extra tests, or more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, body hair in an equal amount can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the sample is processed into a laboratory's system. It includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry if not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. It is cost-efficient for dismissing drug use in most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples presumed positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

In cases with a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging process.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before verification as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days versus urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's quite challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: Drugs become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Haskell, AR, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests due to its superior accuracy and reliability. Key advantages of hair follicle tests include an extended detection window and minimal risk of adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
