Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hensley, Arkansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities available in various cities across the nation. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized analyses.

Over recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has risen. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer them over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for workplaces with strict no-drug policies and legal settings. Their main advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, processed under observation, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate biomarkers within the strands as it grows, thereby offering a long-standing record of alcohol and drug presence. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol history for nearly three months. Collecting hair is hassle-free, tampering with it is somewhat challenging, and it can be shipped with ease.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10-panel, it is advisable to gather 150mg. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation as the key steps.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is cost-effective to exclude drug use in most specimens, any positive findings need confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. Specimens that are tentatively positive during Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Should a test sample be tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at lower concentrations in comparison to other methods like urine or saliva, making hair drug screening a notably intricate procedure.

For any positive screening outcomes, Confirmation is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before the confirmation process where necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation aligns with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, increasing result precision.
  • Historical use records: This method indicates drug use trends over time, beyond merely current use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drug presence in hair takes about 5-7 days to become evident.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often incurs more costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
