Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing in Hiwasse, Arkansas. If you require hair-based drug or alcohol analyses, we specialize in these tests with centers located in every major city nationwide. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to suit specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent approach in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly leaning towards hair tests over traditional urine methods. Many entities prefer hair tests for their stringent drug use policies due to their extended detection window, which can trace drug usage for up to 90 days. Although a urine test remains most accurate for recent use within 5 days, hair testing involves observed collection, minimizing the potential for tampering.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a lengthy timeline of alcohol and other drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair shaft. When cut near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection period for substances. This type of sample is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

By sampling a 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (akin in size to a #2 pencil), nearest the scalp, one obtains 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG supplements and/or examinations beyond 10 drug panels, collecting 150mg is advised. We recommend the specimen be weighed with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. When we mention head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process comprises four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is introduced into the lab's system. This phase includes verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial step to quickly identify drugs of abuse. Although Screening effectively rules out drug use for the majority of samples at a lower cost, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples yielding presumed positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where the Screening stage indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lesser concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any suspected positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data provision: Shows drug use patterns over time, not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: It usually requires 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individualized hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
