Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Humnoke, Arkansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these tests, with facilities across cities Nationwide ready to administer a hair test. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body to conduct the test. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by workplaces with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of a hair follicle test includes an extended detection period of up to 90 days, performed under observation, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair documents an extended history of substance use by capturing indicators within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for nearly a three-month period. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (approximate size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond ten, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This phase entails ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any further information absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening is a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen must be validated for courtroom acceptability. All presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is acquired from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are deemed presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over an extended period, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis specifically examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
