Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Iron Springs, Arkansas. For hair or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair tests and have centers across the nation ready to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for the test, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in drug screening processes. Employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for it over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests appeal to zero-tolerance policies and judicial systems due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection procedure, and resistance to tampering. Still, urine tests remain most precise for usage within a recent five-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the hair fibers, providing a lengthy history of substance use. When taken close to the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol use for up to roughly 3 months. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil size) near the scalp will yield 100mg, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody may not have provided.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient means to eliminate most cases of drug use, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples suspected to be positive during Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample is presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which explains why hair drug testing is the most challenging procedure.

All presumptive positive results must be confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples identified as presumptive positives are washed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can show substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to tamper with: Hair testing is difficult to cheat, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical usage data: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
