Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lawson, Arkansas. Specializing in this type of test, we have numerous testing centers across cities Nationwide, ready for hair or alcohol assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing procedures. Organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are utilized by zero-tolerance employers, judges, and probation offices. Hair drug testing offers a substantial detection window of up to 90 days. The sample collection process is observed, making cheating nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting usage within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is quite challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an acceptable alternative. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample initially enters the laboratory system, ensuring the sample was securely sealed and correctly sent, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data that the electronic chain of custody system doesn't supply.

Screening provides a preliminary verification for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to identify drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal credibility. Any samples that show a preliminary positive in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

If the Screening phase preliminarily finds a sample positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most intricate methodologies to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive get thoroughly washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs require 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
