In Lee Creek, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those needing drug or alcohol tests relying on hair samples, we offer professional expertise nationwide. Hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be examined. Hair analysis can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a staple in drug testing. Courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals often require these tests over urine tests. They serve zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers due to their 90-day detection capability and secure procedure, rendering them tamper-proof. For drugs used in the last 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

The assessment of hair has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands preserve a prolonged record of substance use by integrating biomarkers into the fibers as they grow. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can supply an approximate 3-month timeframe for the detection of alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, generally resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s balance for weighing the specimen is suggested. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The mention of head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is related to the initial preparation of a sample into a lab’s system, which includes making sure the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary review for the presence of drugs. Screening serves as an economical approach to determine drug usage in most cases, yet a positive result requires validation to be usable in legal proceedings. Any samples with a preliminary positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample in the Screening stage shows a preliminary positive indication, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair but at much lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive result from screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all samples that are presumptively positive undergo necessary washing. The complete laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely hard, yielding more trustworthy results.
  • Historical insight: It provides an account of drug use patterns over time, not limited solely to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur more costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair development can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the prevalent term "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
