What it is, How it works

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over ten panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we mean scalp hair; body hair encompasses other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substances. While it's a cost-efficient means to absolve the majority of samples from drug consumption, a positive initial result requires confirmation for court admissibility. All presumptively positive samples from Screening need secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes Extraction. Here, drug components are isolated from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug tests.

Confirmation for any positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before Confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes review against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
