Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lockesburg, Arkansas. Specializing in hair testing, we provide drug or alcohol hair tests with testing locations in numerous cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as an alternative to urine drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals have shifted to hair testing, particularly those with strict anti-drug policies. Among its advantages, a hair test offers extended detection of up to 90 days and involves an observed collection process, making it difficult to cheat. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. It's easy to collect, fairly resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (close in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary additional data entry if not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening implements a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While this cost-effective method can rule out drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which capture a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Tracks historical data: It outlines a usage trend across time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
