Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Marked Tree, Arkansas. Our specialty is in hair testing for drugs and alcohol. We have testing centers in every city Nationwide that can conduct hair tests. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head; body hair is also an option in most scenarios. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair testing over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The major advantage of a hair follicle test is its long detection window, up to 90 days, collected through monitored procedures, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by locking biomarkers within the strands. When sourced close to the scalp, hair offers about a three-month detection timeframe for substances. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's diameter) near the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplementary, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process consists of four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial sample integration into a lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entries not available via the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for drug presence. Although it serves as a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in most cases, a verified result via Screening requires confirmation to be court admissible. Samples testing positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation step.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is selected from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drug removal from hair occurs at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of positives from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Necessary washing of presumptive positive samples precedes confirmation. The laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Records usage history: Offers insights into drug usage trends over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually carry a higher cost compared to other techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual growth variations.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often misused; the analysis targets the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Marked Tree, AR, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly preferred over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy. Hair test benefits include a longer window of detection, typically up to 90 days, which offers a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
