Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Marvell, Arkansas. Whether you require hair testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialty and nationwide network of testing centers will accommodate your needs. With a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body, samples can typically be collected and analyzed to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options.

The trend toward hair follicle testing for drugs has been increasing in recent years. Many employers, court systems, and professionals in the field of Substance Abuse Prevention now favor hair drug testing over the standard urine test. Companies with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationers find hair tests invaluable. The test's main advantage is a longer drug use detection window of up to 90 days, using overseen sample collection, and its near impossibility to falsify. For drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method to detect drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer close to a three-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary and swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, any positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

In the event of a positive presumptive result in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex process to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical patterns: It can reveal a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
