Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in McCaskill, Arkansas. Our expertise in hair tests is backed by nationwide centers ready to conduct hair screening. Adequate hair length from the crown or body—typically 1.5 to 2 inches—is needed for these tests, which may analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as per requirements.

Recently, the popularity of hair follicle testing for drug detection has surged. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine analysis. This method is favored when employers enforce strict drug-free guidelines, for court mandates, and probation checks. Advantages of hair tests include extended detection but for recent 5-day use, urine tests remain unrivaled.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for determining drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to roughly three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and including approximately 200 strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp should yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For tests of EtG, add-ons, and/or beyond 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the specimen. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning step, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for detecting drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be acceptable in legal proceedings. All samples that show a potential positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For samples that yield a potential positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed to be positive are washed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty in falsification: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a depiction of drug usage patterns over time, rather than capturing only recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Does not detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Diverse results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Please note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In McCaskill, AR, the advantages of hair follicle tests over urine tests become clear with a reliable, longer detection span.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
