Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluation services right in Moark, Arkansas. For individuals needing hair-related testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis and have facilities in cities across the country. To conduct a hair test, the crown of your head should feature 1.5 to 2 inches of hair or alternatively, body hair can often be used. Whether testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options, we assure quality results.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method in drug evaluations. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine analysis.Hair tests are preferred by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and probationary checks due to their extended detection period of drug use, which reaches up to 90 days. These tests are conducted through an observed process and are extremely challenging to tamper with. Despite this, for substance use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures the history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When sourced from near the root, hair can reveal substance use over roughly a 90-day period. The collection process is straightforward, alterations are not easily made, and samples are easy to send.

A section of 1.5 inches encompassing around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a standard #2 pencil) from the root will provide 100mg of hair, deemed ideal for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, extended panel tests, and those above 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't an option, a proportional amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for obtaining a drug test outcome involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial input of a sample into the lab's system. This includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and logging any supplementary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for illegal substance use. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for legal acceptance. Any samples with a preliminary positive result require further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set up for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations notably lower than those used in other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug tests particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any initial positive result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to final confirmation as necessary. The whole procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, aligns with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a much shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: Provides a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair tests.
  • Expense: Hair drug assays tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle itself beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
