Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Monette, Arkansas. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialization lies in hair analysis with facilities across all US cities ready to conduct the test. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. It can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor this method over traditional urine testing. It’s favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers due to its extended 90-day detection period and observed collection method, which is nearly cheat-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for spotting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal about a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily shippable.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be used in court. Samples that are presumably positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a usage pattern over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
