Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Moro, Arkansas. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, and we possess facilities in all cities across the U.S. that can conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have shifted more towards the hair follicle approach. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over the traditional urine method. Hair follicle evaluations are ideal for employers maintaining zero-tolerance substance policies and individuals mandated by court or probation. The major advantage is its extended history of drug use detection, typically up to 90 days, conducted under observation and greatly resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting recent 5-day drug use, urine tests are still superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a longer-term record of alcohol and other substances, capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal drug or alcohol use for up to a three-month period. The collection process is straightforward, making adulteration difficult, and the samples are easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches long, with around 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and screenings above 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of hair. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in processing drug test results in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data input not managed by an electronic custody chain.

The Screening process serves as a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, any results pointing to possible drug use must be verified before being court-admissible. All samples showing potential positivity in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample indicates potential positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations relative to other methods (such as urine or saliva testing), highlighting why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

To confirm any positive results from Screening, methodologies such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed. The whole testing procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated based on the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • High accuracy: Hair drug tests are highly accurate because they are hard to tamper with.
  • Provides usage history: These tests can illustrate a timeline of drug usage, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent drug use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair samples.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
