Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Pleasant, Arkansas. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we have centers in numerous cities nationwide. With a hair length requirement of 1.5 to 2 inches, either from the scalp or body, we can analyze samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become increasingly common for screening purposes. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals now often prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests are crucial for organizations with strict no-drug-use policies due to their longer detection period of up to 90 days and minimal chances of tampering. For recent drug use detection, within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, such a sample can reveal substance use over an estimated 3-month span. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp offers 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When describing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses hair from all other parts (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test in a lab follows four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s database, ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped properly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional entries needed beyond what the electronic chain of custody provides.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs. Although it serves as a cost-efficient means to rule out substance use in many cases, any positive findings in Screening must be confirmed for legal use. Samples deemed positive in Screening undergo an additional confirmation test.

For samples flagged as presumptive positive during Screening, additional strands are extracted from the original source and readied for Extraction. Here, the drug compounds are isolated from the hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis one of the more challenging procedures.

Confirmation of a positive screen utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples identified as presumptive positive are washed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the guidelines set by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: The reliable results make it challenging to falsify a hair drug test.
  • Reports usage trends: It details drug use behavior over time, rather than delivering just recent use data.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect fresh use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other testing options.
  • Inconsistent results: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
