Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mountain View, Arkansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recent trends in drug testing favor hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests instead of urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation find these tests beneficial. A primary advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that minimizes tampering, though urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected from the scalp, it can offer nearly a 90-day detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For tests like EtG, supplements, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The pivotal stages in the lab for processing drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing within a lab's framework. This stage checks the sample's integrity, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, swift evaluation for substances. While it's an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court validity. Samples yielding an initial positive result in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

For samples testing positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. Here, substances are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other tests (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is among the most complex testing methods.

Positive screening outcomes undergo verification via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug consumption up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests' shorter span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Altering hair drug test results is notably challenging, bolstering result precision.
  • Chronicles usage history: It reveals a drug use pattern over extended periods, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigment and individual growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
