Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in O'Kean, Arkansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities available in every city throughout the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair testing over the traditional urine test. This method is frequently chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation. Its main advantage is its extended detection window for drug usage, up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making it nearly impossible to alter. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a history of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will acquire 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screens exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. In reference to head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample as it enters a lab’s system. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary fast evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though it serves as an economical option to discount drug usage for most samples, any positive finding requires Confirmation to hold up in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening are subject to subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing when necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use history extending up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a reduced detection window.
  • Tough to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite tough, which enhances result reliability.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a drug use pattern over a period, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A time of around 5-7 days is necessary for drug detection in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur more costs than other drug-test methods.
  • Result variations: Varied factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing: In O'Kean, AR, hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. It has a longer detection period, providing a comprehensive view of substance use history. This makes hair testing a more reliable method for employers looking for detailed insights.

Furthermore, hair follicle tests deter cheating, unlike urine tests, which can be more easily tampered with. This aspect of hair testing contributes to the integrity and dependability of the results.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
