Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oakhaven, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol tests. With a network of testing centers nationwide, we can accommodate your needs. Hair tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts and can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various other substances, offering customized testing solutions.

The trend has been shifting towards hair follicle drug tests for screening drug use, especially among employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists. This method is favored over urine tests due to its zero-tolerance policies, offering a longer detection window. Hair tests can identify drug usage over 90 days, are collected under supervision, minimizing the chance of tampering, and are tough to falsify. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting very recent drug use, typically within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. By trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair provides an extended history regarding the consumption of alcohol and other substances. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for alcohol and other drugs of up to roughly 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for initial screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. We specifically refer to scalp hair when mentioning head hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome comprises four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the first stage of entering a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly means to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be considered valid in legal contexts. Samples that yield a presumptively positive result during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample be found presumptively positive during the Screening phase, an extra portion of hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when required. The comprehensive laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the capability to spot drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier relative to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
