In Oil Trough, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is necessary, our expertise is in hair analysis, with facilities across Nationwide cities available to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head's crown or elsewhere can suffice. Hair examinations are suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent recently as a method of substance screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and specialists in Substance Abuse are favoring hair evaluations over standard urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers upholding rigid anti-drug policies, judicial bodies, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair analysis is its extended detection timeframe, typically reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision, offering near-foolproof results. However, for assessing recent drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by enclosing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window for up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of roughly 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we refer to scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not given by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptance. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require a second confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests discover drug use for up to 90 days, versus the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more accurate results.
  • Supplies historical data: It showcases a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
