Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Owensville, Arkansas. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities accessible in all cities across the nation that can conduct hair assessments. Typically, one should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing requirements.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle analysis. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair assessments over traditional urine analyses. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation often rely on hair follicle assessments. Major advantages include a longer detection period for substances, generally up to 90 days, using an observed collection method that is difficult to compromise. However, urine tests remain preferable for detecting recent drug consumption within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of substance use through the entrapment of biomarkers within the hair's growing strand. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to approximately three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch collection of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be procured. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process mandates checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not accommodated by an automated chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to negate drug use in a majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in a legal context. Any samples indicating presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample signals presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is considered the most laborious method to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo a cleansing process prior to validation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Verification is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Merits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days as opposed to urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical data: It can portray a pattern of substance use over time, not limited to recent occurrences.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing strategies.
  • Outcome variations: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing in Owensville, AR offers a superior level of accuracy and reliability. Hair tests have a longer detection window, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of substance use far beyond the capability of urine tests. This enhanced detection capability makes hair testing an invaluable tool for employers seeking thorough assessments of a person's history with substances.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing accessed in Owensville, AR provides an extended detection window, which can trace drug use up to 90 days back. This long-range assessment offers employers a broad perspective on an employee or candidate's substance history, essentially presenting a more complete picture than shorter detection methods such as urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the key advantages of hair follicle tests performed in Owensville, AR, is their tamper-resistant nature. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
