Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Peach Orchard, Arkansas. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities across the country equipped to handle hair assessments. Approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. Hair tests are versatile for analyzing drugs, alcohol (ETG), and other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a more accurate method. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse counselors have increasingly opted for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers see the benefit of hair testing for its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days. Collection is supervised and highly resistant to manipulation. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a historical record for substances like alcohol and drugs due to its ability to capture biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate usage over a period extending up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs near the scalp, approximately equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial tests and validation. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for precise weighing of the sample. Should scalp hair not be accessible, the same quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the lab consists of four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a specimen into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs. While being a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result from the Screening must be validated to be accepted legally. Samples testing preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This stage separates drugs from the hair at a concentration significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the greatest challenge among testing methodologies.

To verify any positive screening result, one of the following is employed: GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that preliminarily tested positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect drug consumption for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating or cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers a timeline: It provides a comprehensive record of drug use patterns over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days after substance use.
  • Higher expense: The expense of hair drug testing is generally higher compared to other methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as the color of hair and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Peach Orchard, AR? Hair tests offer superior detection capability and accuracy. They shine with their ability to unveil drug use that may evade traditional urine tests. Analyzing a longer history, these tests provide a robust insight into substance use, presenting a clear advantage for reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
