Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Portia, Arkansas. If you need testing for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert choice, with centers located nationwide, including all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body are required for a hair test. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing preferences.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are often chosen by employers with strict drug use rules, courts, and probationers. The main advantage of a hair drug test is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with collection done under supervision, making it difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about initially processing a sample into the laboratory's system. The process includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug use. Although Screening economically rules out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be used in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection scope.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over a duration, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Portia, AR

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities and accuracy. While urine tests typically capture recent substance use, hair tests provide a longer detection window, offering a clearer picture of an individual's drug use history. This makes them more reliable for employers and legal needs, reflecting sustained drug usage patterns rather than short-term usage.

Furthermore, hair tests reduce the risk of false negatives, which can occur with urine tests due to timing or sample adulteration. The flexibility in hair sampling—from scalp to other body hair—enhances reliability, ensuring no recent haircut can thwart the testing process. For those requiring effective monitoring, hair follicle testing in Portia, AR is unmatched.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Portia, AR

One of the most significant benefits of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, capable of revealing drug usage up to 90 days prior. This makes it an invaluable tool for employers in Portia, AR, who seek a comprehensive understanding of substance use behaviors in job applicants or current employees, allowing for informed decision-making.

The lengthy detection period of hair tests means individual consumption patterns are more accurately reflected, unlike more temporary snapshots provided by traditional tests. Employers gain a detailed view of an individual's substance history, enabling them to maintain a vigilant and proactive approach to workplace safety and policy adherence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Portia, AR

Hair follicle tests stand out due to their tamper-resistant nature, significantly reducing risks of sample adulteration. The collection process itself serves as a deterrent against attempts to alter or replace samples, thus ensuring the authenticity and credibility of the results. This integrity makes hair testing a reliable choice in Portia, AR.

The robustness of hair testing invites confidence among employers and legal bodies needing dependable results. Unlike urine tests that can be manipulated more easily, hair testing ensures that what is being tested is genuine, providing unquestionable results. Opt for hair follicle tests to achieve clarity and avoid uncertainties associated with sample tampering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
