Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Readland, Arkansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise is in hair testing with centers in every city nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, hair of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body may be collected. Hair testing can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more common for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine ones. Hair drug tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers. A significant advantage of hair drug testing is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, making it hard to cheat, though for testing recent drug use, urine testing is still most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs of up to around 3 months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, refining it is somewhat difficult, and shipping it is uncomplicated.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (analogous to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, generates 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. In contrast, body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory process of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This step includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry lacking in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial expeditious assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach for eliminating drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive screen needs further verification to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are derived from hair in a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed adhering to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complying with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
