Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rena, Arkansas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the Nation capable of administering a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making it almost impossible to falsify. Nevertheless, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a powerful means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair provide a long-term history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair delivers approximately a three-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process involves verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most cases, any positive Screen result needs to be verified for court admissibility. Samples showing as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing stands as one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring more dependable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variance in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
