Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Reyno, Arkansas. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we have centers nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options for customized analysis.

In recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for this method over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are used by employers with stringent drug-free policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. The chief advantage is its ability to detect drug use over a longer period, up to 90 days, making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a longer detection period for alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand. A sample collected near the scalp can approximately provide a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. Regarding head hair, it's specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of incorporating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is budget-friendly for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It's challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows drug use patterns: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
