Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Selma, Arkansas. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, and we feature facilities across all cities nationwide capable of administering such tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is generally adequate. Hair samples can be evaluated for substances, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly common methodology for drug evaluation. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor a hair analysis over a typical urine test. This approach is utilized by employers upholding strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The core advantage of a hair follicle evaluation is its ability to detect substances over a prolonged period of up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection, making it exceedingly difficult to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands retain biological markers within their fibers, offering an extended timeline of substance use. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol intake for up to three months. The procedure for collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 strands (roughly a #2 pencil’s thickness) cut nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for testing and confirming results. For tests like EtG, extra panels over 10, 150mg is recommended. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy in weighing the sample. Where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent measure of body hair can be used. By "head hair," we mean solely the hair on the scalp, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

Four core steps outline the lab process for drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial entry into the lab system, verifying that it is sealed and sent correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is economical for negating drug use in most samples, positive results must be further confirmed for legal validation. Any sample evidencing a presumptive positive result thus demands another round of confirmation.

Should Screening yield a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further preparation in Extraction. Here, substances are drawn from hair at markedly lower levels than other tests, such as urine or saliva, making hair testing one of the most intricate procedures.

Positive outcomes from Screening are affirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation as necessary. All steps from Accessioning through Confirmation are scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can trace drugs up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to sabotage: The accuracy of hair drug tests is heightened by their resistance to cheating.
  • Chronic usage insights: This test presents a timeline of drug usage over months, rather than immediate consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Recent consumption undetectability: Drugs only show in hair after 5-7 days of use.
  • Higher cost: Hair testing generally incurs greater costs than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair tone and individual hair growth can impact levels of drug residue in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests" being common, the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
