In Smackover, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair sample testing for drugs and alcohol, our national network includes testing centers in every major city to accommodate your hair test needs. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, and customizable hair analysis.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug screening methods. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services employ hair testing. Its main advantage is detecting drug use over a longer period—up to 90 days—making it difficult to manipulate. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil’s size) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an ideal sample for thorough screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result encompass four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening executes an initial check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any sample showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitates a supplementary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the technical difficulty of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Every presumptive positive sample is cleaned before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally incur greater expenses compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often branded as "hair follicle tests", the analysis primarily targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Smackover, AR

The superiority of hair testing over urine testing in Smackover, AR, lies in its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests deliver a broader detection window, spotting drug use up to 90 days prior, far surpassing traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies value this long-term insight into an individual's substance use history.

Unlike urine tests which are limited to recent drug intake, hair analysis offers a comprehensive overview, minimizing the chances of evasion. This makes it a preferred choice for courts and probation services, ensuring consistency in detecting substance abuse. The robust methodology of hair testing offers an unassailable stance against attempted falsification in drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
