At Accredited Drug Testing we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Smyrna, Arkansas. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is exceptional, with facilities across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed, and body hair can be an alternative. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized services.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug testing has seen increased adoption. Employers, the court system, and professionals dealing with substance abuse prefer hair drug tests to conventional urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies employ these tests to ensure compliance. The key advantage is the extended 90-day detection window, observed collection, and tamper-proof nature. However, urine tests remain preferred for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides an extended record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs for up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the hair. In the case of unavailability of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be used. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' covers all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing step for a sample within a lab's system. It entails ensuring that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any missing data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives during Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is sourced from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, the drug is extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres both to the CAP Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is notably challenging to alter a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, unlike methods focusing solely on recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis centers on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in Smyrna, AR, the advantages become quite clear. Hair testing boasts superior detection accuracy over traditional urine tests, offering reliability and a broader detection window, providing a clearer view of substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
