Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Snow Lake, Arkansas. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, we are experts in the field with multiple testing facilities across the nation, ready to conduct hair evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. These tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug screening has become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse authorities favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle examinations are preferred by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies and legal systems managing probation. The key advantage lies in the longer detection period up to 90 days, along with observed collection process which limits manipulation. Yet, urine tests remain more precise for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The implementation of hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands, hair can offer an extended retrospective record of drug and alcohol use. If gathered from a position near the scalp, a hair sample can present a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG supplements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair can be obtained. When we reference head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results involves four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure of incorporating a sample into the lab's system, which includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive Screening result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methodologies (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a cleaning process prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, contributing to its result accuracy.
  • Offers historical overview: It presents a usage pattern over a duration, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the process examines the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
