Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sparkman, Arkansas. Our expertise extends to hair and alcohol tests, with centers in every city across the country to facilitate your testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body are required for these assessments. Our hair tests are adaptable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized analyses.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug testing has been adopted as the preferred method for screening drug use. A wide array of institutions, including employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, are opting for this approach instead of traditional urine tests. This method is ideal for entities with strict no-drug-use policies. The standout benefit of hair follicle tests is their extended detection timeframe, spanning up to 90 days. Moreover, they involve an observed process, making them nearly foolproof. For recent substance use within the past five days, urine tests still offer superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained recognition as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair embodies a protracted history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. Regarding head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for drug abuse indicators. While it is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be admissible in legal contexts. Any sample that tests positive during Screening requires a secondary validation.

If a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cherishing accuracy: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug evaluation, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Historical insight: It facilitates the insight of drug use patterns over a prolonged timeframe, not just recent conduct.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to trace new usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
