Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stamps, Arkansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and has centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent times, drug testing increasingly includes hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and probation overseers due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and the fact that they are nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use screening in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred and accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. The hair provides a lengthy history of substances, including alcohol, by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system, which includes checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical method to negate drug usage for most samples; a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample returns presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is removed from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine testing, which has a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely tough to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing the results' accuracy.
  • Provides historical insights: It can display a trend of drug usage over time, not only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
